James Cameron is voicing concerns about the increasing use of AI to create performers. In a recent interview on CBS’ Sunday Morning, the director explained he doesn’t want to support the idea of replacing real actors with digitally created ones.
Even before generative AI was widely known, some in Hollywood mistakenly thought James Cameron was trying to eliminate actors from filmmaking when he was creating the original Avatar. He clarified that these beliefs were unfounded.
He explained that his work wasn’t intended to replace actors, but to help them. He described a common fear that computers would take actors’ jobs, but clarified that his goal was actually to enhance the collaboration between actors and directors.
Cameron believes that current advances in AI are particularly concerning. He’s worried about tools that can generate characters and performances entirely from scratch, without any real person involved. He explained, “The ability to create a character, an actor, and an entire performance just from a text prompt is truly frightening to me.”
These comments come after a recent discussion sparked in the entertainment industry. At a summit in Zurich last September, producer and comedian Eline Van der Velden presented Tilly Norwood, a performer created using artificial intelligence. Van der Velden mentioned that several talent agencies were interested in signing the virtual actor, which quickly caused a strong negative reaction from people working in the field.
Van der Velden recently told Variety that she believes AI will gradually become commonplace in the film industry. She predicts we’ll first see AI used for special effects, and eventually, entire films created using the technology. She also thinks audiences will judge movies based on the story itself, not whether the performers are human or computer-generated.
The debate about actors being replaced by AI is gaining momentum, and James Cameron’s recent comments highlight the strong disagreement among filmmakers on this topic.
