Sigourney Weaver believes science-fiction movies are frequently misinterpreted by critics. She shared this opinion during a discussion at New York Comic Con, referencing her 2015 film, Chappie.
Sigourney Weaver explained that critics didn’t understand her film Chappie, which she made with Neill Blomkamp. She believes they were too focused on the special effects instead of recognizing it as a heartfelt story – a robot’s journey to become ‘real,’ much like Pinocchio – and therefore didn’t appreciate the film’s true value.
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Chappie tells the story of a police robot with artificial intelligence who is stolen by a criminal group. The movie stars Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, and Hugh Jackman. While it received a variety of opinions, it currently has a 32% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Weaver shared that Blomkamp once suggested a new Alien film featuring her character, Newt, making a return.
She explained that Neil had shared his idea for another Alien movie with her, one that would have brought the character Newt back. She was really impressed with his vision for the film, including the designs and the story. While she didn’t want to go into specifics, she said the project ultimately stalled due to disagreements over creative control.
Sigourney Weaver is most famous for playing Ellen Ripley in the original Alien movies. She appeared as the character in four films and has thought about revisiting the role. Weaver recently shared that she read a portion of a possible new script from producer Walter Hill and found it very compelling. She described the 50-page outline as extraordinary, noting that it detailed where Ripley would be in the present day.
Weaver argues that science fiction shouldn’t be valued just for its special effects, but also for how well it tells a story and connects with audiences on an emotional level.
