I’m a huge Marvel fan, and I was so excited to see Deadpool & Wolverine break $1.3 billion worldwide – it’s been their biggest hit in ages! But I just read some financial reports, and it turns out all those ticket sales don’t necessarily mean Disney is making a ton of profit, which is a bit surprising.
A new report about the U.K. production of the film shows Disney spent over $533 million to create the hit movie. The final cost went over the original budget, mainly because the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes caused production delays. This makes the film one of the priciest movies ever made.
Since most of the movie was filmed in the UK, Disney had to submit thorough financial reports there. These reports revealed the studio received $104.7 million in tax credits, bringing their overall production cost down to approximately $429 million. However, Forbes points out that production costs aren’t the only factor to consider.
Movie theaters don’t get to keep all the money from ticket sales – they usually keep around half. So, for a movie like Deadpool & Wolverine that made $1.34 billion, Disney would likely earn about $670 million.
After accounting for the studio’s costs of $429 million, the film initially appears to have made a profit of about $241 million in theaters. However, that number looks good only until you factor in additional significant expenses.
Disney doesn’t reveal how much it spends marketing each movie, but experts believe a huge global campaign like the one for Deadpool & Wolverine could easily cost over $200 million. When you include that marketing cost, the actual profit the movie makes in theaters is significantly reduced.
Besides ticket sales, movies also earn money from things like DVD and Blu-ray sales, merchandise, and streaming services. However, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how much each of those contributes to a single film’s success. Last year, a Disney representative pointed out that box office numbers don’t give a complete picture of a movie’s profitability, as they don’t include income from other sources.
Despite being promoted as a mature, action-packed comic book movie, Deadpool & Wolverine’s blend of humor and violence has led to some discussion and disagreement.
Sarah Brighton, head of Hope UK, expressed concern that jokes about drugs in the film could affect young people, even though it’s rated R. She explained that linking drug references to humor and trendy inside jokes could unintentionally make drug use seem appealing and exciting to them.
Discussing mature topics involving Disney characters is tricky because the company also markets those same characters to families through toys, theme parks, and cruises.
While a $1.3 billion box office seems like a huge win, the actual profit for the studio is more complex. Big movies, particularly Marvel films shot internationally, have enormous costs. Disney probably earned a profit, but it wasn’t the massive amount many people expect.
