Claudia Black, best known for her roles in science fiction shows like Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and the Riddick movies, recently explained why she won’t be reprising her role as Mother Klothow in the second season of the Star Wars series, Ahsoka. Beyond acting on screen, Black is also a prolific voice actor, having contributed to popular video games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Diablo III, and Uncharted.
I was really excited to hear about Lucy Black’s role in the new ‘Spartacus’ series, and I recently read an interview with her about her time on ‘Ahsoka.’ She played Klothow, a Nightsister who helped both Grand Admiral Thrawn and Morgan Elsbeth when they faced off against Ahsoka. She said getting to be part of the ‘Star Wars’ universe was a lot of fun – she described it as ‘playful’ and a great experience for fans of all ages, which is awesome to hear!
I was really disappointed to hear that Black won’t be back for season two. She explained it wasn’t an easy decision, but it came down to practical things. Disney, where things are changing, just couldn’t offer her enough money to make it work, especially since filming moved to London and she’s a single mom with responsibilities here in Los Angeles. She needs to be able to support her family, and unfortunately, it just wasn’t feasible.
“It was not something that they could make happen, and therefore, I had to bow out for season two.”
Although she’s leaving the show, Black shared how thankful she was for the experience. She described it as bittersweet, explaining that she emailed Dave Filoni to express her gratitude, telling him it had been an incredible journey. Growing up with Star Wars in the 70s and 80s, she loved the playful and creative atmosphere and felt fortunate to have worked with such wonderful people and directors on a project that utilized innovative technology like ‘The Volume’.
Black was really struck by the innovative technology used during filming. He was captivated by it, constantly asking the team how it all worked. He found it amazing that they could create the backgrounds live, changing as they filmed on set, describing the atmosphere as fun and creative.
As a movie lover, one of the best parts for me was sharing the experience with my younger son. He’s really into the newer Star Wars stuff, and it was great to connect with him over something he loves. He’s a huge fan of The Clone Wars – that’s the Star Wars generation he grew up with, and it was fun to finally get to experience it together.
Ultimately, Black recognized the difficult economics of the entertainment industry. She explained, with sadness, that the company couldn’t financially support her as a single mother, but she understood the pressures and financial constraints they were facing. Everyone involved had to assess the situation and make tough decisions about moving forward.
