I recently heard James Cameron talk about what Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, thought of my most anticipated movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s exciting to get a peek behind the scenes and see what the studio head thinks of the film!
Cameron explained that Iger prefers to watch the entire film before giving his feedback.
He’s a fascinating person. He usually waits to share his thoughts until he sees the finished product. When he first watched an early cut of [FIRE AND ASH] – which was over three hours long – he told me he knew I’d keep editing it down, but he thought it was amazing. Essentially, he loved the film.
Cameron described a Zoom meeting where someone was challenged on their notes. He said the leader didn’t mind others bringing up points, but then quickly dismissed them. After that, Cameron felt the meeting was over.
Cameron discussed how feedback from viewers influences his creative process. He admitted it can be challenging to understand at times, but often reveals what aspects of a story are resonating with the audience. He explained, “It sometimes takes a bit of intuition to understand what people are saying, but they’re often very clear about what they like, why it works, and what really grabs their attention. We’ve found a sweet spot with the level of intensity in the current version.”
Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third film in the Avatar series, directed by James Cameron and written with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The story was developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Picking up where Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) left off, the movie once again stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and many other familiar faces.
James Cameron envisioned continuing the story of Avatar (2009) almost immediately, revealing plans for two sequels back in 2010. Creating The Way of Water (originally titled Fire and Ash) was a challenging process, demanding innovative technology for filming underwater scenes. Production started in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and took over three years to complete, wrapping up in December 2020.

The movie’s release has been pushed back several times, most recently on June 13, 2023. It will now premiere at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on December 1st, and hit U.S. cinemas on December 19th. Plans are also underway for two follow-up films, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, which are currently scheduled to come out in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
