I’m really excited for James Cameron’s new Avatar movie, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash‘! Everyone’s talking about it, and it’s coming out on December 19th – I can’t wait!
Industry experts predict the movie will likely open with between $100 million and $130 million, with initial estimates around $110 million, based on data from three weeks before its release.
Early numbers suggest a wide range of people are interested in seeing the new film. The sequel is attracting both men and women, and slightly more men seem eager to see it right away. Although initial interest isn’t quite as high as it was for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ ($134.1 million opening), industry analysts are optimistic about its potential.
According to Deadline, Avatar movies are different from Marvel films because people treat them as special events. Fans go to see Avatar in premium formats like 3D and IMAX for the immersive experience itself, rather than to hunt for hidden details or cameos.
This new movie picks up the story on the planet Pandora, bringing back familiar actors like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, and Kate Winslet. James Cameron wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and the story was further developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. As the third film in the Avatar series after ‘The Way of Water’, it also lays the groundwork for future installments, with ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ currently planned for release in 2029 and 2031.
The world of Avatar is more expansive than you think. Check out the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, coming to theaters December 19th!
Plus, Avatar: The Way of Water returns to cinemas in 3D for a limited one-week engagement, starting October 3rd.

Production on ‘Fire and Ash’ started in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, at the same time as filming for ‘The Way of Water.’ It took over three years to complete, finally wrapping up in late December 2020. The film’s creation was complicated by the need for new and complex technology to capture performances underwater. ‘Fire and Ash’ will debut at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on December 1st, and then be released in the U.S. on December 19th.
Although early ticket sales for Fire and Ash aren’t as high as those for Way of Water, experts point out that Way of Water did remarkably well considering it was released 13 years after the first Avatar movie. Current predictions suggest Fire and Ash will also have a strong opening, especially in theaters offering premium viewing experiences like IMAX or 3D.
