The casting of Linda Hamilton – best known as Sarah Connor from the Terminator films – in Stranger Things 5 was a big surprise! Even though it’s the show’s last season, adding new characters is always exciting. That’s certainly true with Hamilton’s character, Dr. Kay, who we first met in Volume One. Before the season began, all we knew was that Dr. Kay is a brilliant, tough scientist who’s capable in a fight. Now, after seeing the first episodes, we have a much better understanding of who she is, what motivates her, and what challenges she’ll present to the heroes. Let’s take a closer look at Linda Hamilton’s Dr. Kay and explore everything we’ve learned.

Who Is Linda Hamilton’s Dr. Kay on Stranger Things 5?
In the upcoming season of Stranger Things, Linda Hamilton plays Dr. Kay, a scientist sent to Hawkins to research the Upside Down and individuals like Eleven. However, she’s also a highly skilled and intimidating military commander – an excellent shot with a firearm. Dr. Kay is portrayed as a pragmatic character; she’s determined to protect people and close the gate to the Upside Down, but she’s willing to do whatever it takes, regardless of the cost. While not outright villainous, Dr. Kay isn’t a hero either, placing her firmly in the role of an antagonist.
In the first part of Stranger Things 5, Dr. Kay put children at risk by taking them into the Upside Down. When someone on her team pointed out her irresponsible behavior, she simply told him to find a way to protect them.
What Is Dr. Kay Doing in Hawkins?
In the fifth season of Stranger Things, Dr. Kay is in charge of a secret military base built within the Upside Down. This base is accessed through MAC-Z, a heavily guarded and restricted location in Hawkins where a massive portal to the Upside Down is still open.
Linda Hamilton plays Dr. Kay, who is conducting her own investigations within the Upside Down base. She’s studying the creatures there, including a tentacled monster she keeps contained in the lab. We first see Dr. Kay in the first part of Stranger Things 5 while she’s dissecting a large, pulsing organ that turned out to be part of the Upside Down’s strange, organic wall.

Dr. Kay is focused on finding Eleven, believing it’s essential. She feels finding Eleven is critical because innocent people are being harmed. It’s also likely she wants to study Eleven herself.
Dr. Kay Doesn’t Know or Care if Eleven is Good or Bad
Dr. Kay believes Eleven was responsible for the disappearance of the four children in Hawkins during the first part of Stranger Things 5—though Vecna was actually the one who took them. Kay doesn’t seem to understand Eleven’s motivations or her connection to the Upside Down, as she isn’t concerned with whether Eleven was trying to harm or help the kids, revealing a lack of understanding about Eleven’s true nature.
Dr. Kay Found Eleven’s ‘Kryptonite’—a Sonic Weapon She Developed
In the first part of Stranger Things 5, Eleven attempts to break through Vecna’s barrier in the Upside Down using her powers, but the military intervenes. They arrive with a powerful sonic weapon that completely stops Eleven from using her abilities. Hopper describes the device as Eleven’s weakness. Dr. Kay created this weapon, hoping it will be enough to subdue and capture Eleven.
Okay, so the initial sound attack really gets to Eleven – it practically freezes her and she screams out in pain. Thankfully, Hopper manages to shut it down and she seems okay, but that was just a taste of what was coming. Inside the military base in the Upside Down, they had something even worse waiting for her – a smaller device that clearly had the same effect, like her own personal Kryptonite. It was brutal to watch, and you could tell she wasn’t ready for it.
Dr. Kay’s Mysterious Vault Contains Someone Powerful

After encountering a substance that weakens Eleven, Hopper and Eleven capture Akers, the leader of the group pursuing them. Akers reveals that Dr. Kay is searching for Eleven, but claims that’s all he knows. However, Eleven uses her powers to enter Akers’ mind and discover more about Dr. Kay’s laboratory. She follows Dr. Kay through Akers’ memories, leading her to a secure vault within the facility. Akers insists he doesn’t know what’s inside, but Eleven senses he’s hiding something important. Using her abilities within Akers’ mind, Eleven forces open the vault door, causing Akers to lose consciousness.
Eleven tells Hopper she’s realized Dr. Kay is hiding something dangerous behind her vault door – something like a weakness for Eleven. She explains that’s how Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, was able to create the sonic weapon that weakens Eleven’s powers. Eleven now believes Dr. Kay is holding Vecna captive, which explains why Hopper couldn’t locate him during his searches and why Eleven’s powers couldn’t find him either, as seen in Stranger Things 5.
Despite Hopper’s doubts about finding Vecna in Dr. Kay’s vault – he believed the defenses meant to stop Eleven would also stop Vecna, making it impossible for him to take Holly – he agrees to the plan. Together, they proceed to break into the compound and the vault.
Who Does Dr. Kay Have Trapped in Her Stranger Things 5 Vault?
Following a confrontation with Dr. Kay at her facility, Hopper manages to steal an access key. He locks Eleven outside, then goes inside the vault, planning to sacrifice himself and Vecna to protect Eleven. However, Vecna isn’t there. Simultaneously, as Vecna breaks through a portal from the MAC-Z into the real world in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, Hopper comes back out of the vault.

Just then, we and Eleven discover who Dr. Kay—played by Linda Hamilton—has been holding captive and studying. It’s Eight, also known as Kali, Eleven’s “sister” who appeared in season two. While this surprise appearance in Stranger Things 5 wasn’t exactly what we hoped for, it doesn’t change the current situation.
Is Dr. Kay Still Alive at the End of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1?
Does Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, survive the first part of Stranger Things 5? And will she be back for the second part? The answer is yes – Dr. Kay is still alive at the end of Volume 1.
Just before Hopper and Eleven can reach the vault, they face a major confrontation with Dr. Kay and her troops. During the fight, Hopper is captured by one of the tentacled monsters Dr. Kay has been studying. She reveals the creature is powered by cold but weakened by heat, and she’ll only release him if he reveals everything he knows – specifically, why he’s willing to risk Eleven’s life for the mysterious person behind the door (Kali, also known as Eight). Dr. Kay is desperate to learn what Hopper is hiding, but she doesn’t get the opportunity.

Eleven, still recovering her powers, manages to create a diversion, stabbing Dr. Kay and giving Hopper a chance to get away. He then subdues Dr. Kay, but doesn’t kill her. This marks the final appearance of Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay in the first part of Stranger Things season 5.
What Will Linda Hamilton and Dr. Kay Return in Future Episodes of Stranger Things 5?
Since Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, survived the first part of Stranger Things 5, we expect her to be back for the final episodes, especially Volume 2. However, whether she’ll make it through the entire season remains to be seen.
When Dr. Kay wakes up, it’s unlikely she’ll be willing to cooperate with Hopper and Eleven. We’re also pretty sure Kali, also known as Eight, will reveal that Dr. Kay hasn’t treated her well in the past.

We’re excited that Linda Hamilton will be back as Dr. Kay in Stranger Things 5. Dr. Kay is a fascinating character – she’s not simply good or bad, but someone willing to do whatever it takes, even if it’s harsh or risky, to protect the world. That makes her a really compelling character to watch.
Stranger Things 5, Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
Rotem Rusak leads the editorial team at TopMob. She just finished binge-watching Stranger Things in just 72 hours and is still upset about Eddie Munson’s fate. She’s warned that she’ll be heartbroken if Steve Harrington dies in the fourth season.
