Are There Any Major Character Deaths in STRANGER THINGS 5, Volume 1?

The first part of the final season of Stranger Things is here! With Stranger Things 5, Volume 1 now available, fans are excited to return to Hawkins and see what happens with their favorite characters. However, knowing this is the last season also brings a sense of sadness. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, have even warned us that this season will feature the most shocking and violent death yet! So, the big question is: does that major death happen in Volume 1? And are there any other significant character deaths to be aware of in these first episodes? We’ve got the answers to everything you’re wondering about who survives and who doesn’t in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1.

Are there any Major Character Deaths in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1?

Good news for fans of Stranger Things: no major characters died in the first part of season 5! Steve, Max, Will, Eleven, Robin, and Hopper are all still alive as the show heads into its final episodes. While many viewers braced for a potential loss, we can all breathe a sigh of relief that our favorites are still around. This means more screen time and more moments with the characters we love. Ultimately, it’s about being present until the very end, and for now, everyone is continuing the journey into the final stretch.

Even Ted and Karen Wheeler Are Still Alive at the End of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1

Last week, we wouldn’t have predicted this, but Ted and Karen Wheeler seemed like the most likely characters to die in the first part of Stranger Things 5. They almost met their end in the first episode of Volume 2, facing a Demogorgon sent by Vecna to take Holly. For a moment, we were sure they were gone, especially Ted, who finally got a chance to be a hero with a golf club! Luckily, both of them managed to survive. As of now, Ted and Karen are still alive in Stranger Things 5, and we think this close call probably means they’re safe for the rest of the series. It would be shocking if the show killed them off after such a dramatic and frightening experience.

This scene was exceptionally well-done – if Karen Wheeler from Stranger Things had died in it, it would have been a powerful moment. In fact, it’s one of the best scenes from the entire series, and a standout in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1. It’s incredibly intense, violent, and emotionally heartbreaking. We surprisingly found ourselves really invested in Ted and Karen’s fate, and now we’re just glad they’re still alive!

No Deaths in Stranger Things 5, Volume 1 Mean More Deaths in Volumes 2 and 3

Even though we’re relieved for now, a sense of fear is starting to return, much like the feeling Will gets whenever Vecna is near. The fact that no one died in the first part of Stranger Things 5 suggests many deaths are still coming, including what the creators have described as the show’s most shocking death. It’s likely our favorite characters won’t be so fortunate next time around.

Okay, let’s talk about who might not make it to the end of Stranger Things. Going into the final season, I still had Will, Steve, Eleven, and Hopper on my ‘likely to die’ list. But after seeing what Volume 1 revealed about Will’s storyline, I’m really hoping the writers spare him. Honestly, a twist where Jonathan and Steve are the ones who don’t survive would be a pretty powerful, and darkly ironic, move. It would definitely be a gut punch, but narratively… it could work.

Good news – everyone is still alive! The first four episodes of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1, are now available to stream on Netflix. Volume 2, episodes five through seven, will be released on Christmas Day (December 25th). The final episode, Volume 3, will premiere on New Year’s Eve (December 31st). All volumes become available at 5 PM Pacific Time / 8 PM Eastern Time.

Rotem Rusak leads the editorial team at TopMob. She just finished binge-watching Stranger Things—all of it, in just 72 hours—and is still upset about Eddie Munson. She’s warned that she’ll be heartbroken if Steve Harrington doesn’t make it in the fourth season.
