Gen V Season 2 Finale Bombs as Eric Kripke’s Politics Take a Toll

The season finale of Gen V didn’t appear on Nielsen’s list of most-watched streaming shows, which is a significant decline for the Boys spin-off that was previously expected to be a big success for Amazon Prime Video.

Although the show initially generated excitement and favorable reviews, viewership has recently dropped. This decline seems to coincide with growing criticism of the political themes presented by The Boys creator Eric Kripke, and the show’s particularly controversial scene involving a character resembling Elon Musk.

Gen V Falls Off the Chart

Nielsen data shows that season two of Gen V didn’t appear on the top 10 list of original shows for the week of October 20-26, 2025, which included the release date of its final episode on October 22nd.

Nielsen also measures every available episode, which means nobody binge-watched the series.

Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building had 349 million minutes of viewing time. This means Gen V was watched for fewer minutes – a surprising outcome considering it’s a highly anticipated superhero show supported by Amazon’s major The Boys franchise.

The drop in viewers is particularly noticeable considering publications like Variety initially called the Gen V premiere a success earlier this season. However, that early positive reaction was likely due to the fact that the first three episodes were released simultaneously, which inflated the viewing figures.

Viewership “Fell Off a Cliff” After Premiere

After the show moved to releasing just one episode per week, viewers quickly lost interest. Episode 4, the first released this way, didn’t even appear on Nielsen’s charts, foreshadowing the show’s decline.

By the time the last episode of Gen V aired, viewership had fallen off significantly. The show didn’t even perform as well as many other average streaming series, which was a disappointing result for a show expected to be a major hit.

Politics, Controversy, and Fatigue

The show’s falling ratings are happening at the same time as more and more fans are upset with showrunner Eric Kripke’s focus on political themes.

Kripke recently revealed that Season 5 of The Boys will focus on a rebellion against a tyrannical government, which he indicated was a clear reference to Donald Trump and his followers.

This discussion comes after the controversy surrounding a scene in Gen V where a goat named “Elon Musk” is shown being violently killed.

Many people saw the statement as a deliberate dig at the billionaire owner of X, particularly because the creator has often made fun of conservatives in the past. The meaning was unmistakable.

Franchise In Trouble

After a weaker-than-expected second season of Gen V and the announcement that Season 5 will be the last for The Boys, the popular franchise might be coming to a close.

Kripke has acknowledged that whether we get more The Boys spin-offs – shows like The Boys: Mexico, Vought Rising, and Diabolical – depends on how many people watch. Currently, the viewership numbers aren’t strong enough to guarantee them.
