David Letterman spoke out in support of Seth Meyers after Donald Trump, while President, suggested Meyers should lose his job.
The conflict started after Seth Meyers made fun of Donald Trump during a recent segment on his show, “Late Night.” Trump responded on his social media platform, Truth Social, accusing Meyers of being overly critical and claiming the show’s ratings are very low. He also, as shared by FCC chair Brendan Carr, said Meyers lacks talent and should be fired.
David Letterman, known for hosting “Late Night” on NBC from 1982 to 1993 and “The Late Show” on CBS until 2015, recently praised Seth Meyers on “The Barbara Gaines Show.” He said he was incredibly proud of Meyers, noting that Meyers’ show is essentially a continuation of his own, and that Meyers is doing a fantastic job with it.
During their conversation, Letterman brought up Trump’s approach to global issues, including the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and casually remarked, “Things happen, you know?” He then strongly criticized Trump’s presidency, calling it “a wonder of idiocy” and referring to Trump as “our dictator” who doesn’t appear to be leaving power anytime soon. Letterman went on to say that the administration’s behavior was far worse than anything he’d ever witnessed, claiming it was “18 times the worst thing humans have ever done.”

Meyers joins Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert as the latest late-night host to be criticized by Trump. Kimmel’s show had a brief pause in September after comments regarding Charlie Kirk, but it returned after a week. While Colbert’s “The Late Show” will end in May 2026, CBS states this is due to financial reasons, not politics.
Letterman’s response emphasized the friendly, supportive relationships between late-night talk show hosts, while also pointing out that Trump continues to criticize the shows. His direct language showed his annoyance with the president’s statements and constant criticism of comedians.
