The Rush Hour revival is now officially happening.
I’m really excited to hear that Brett Ratner is directing a new Rush Hour movie, and that Paramount is handling distribution! It’s great to see him back at a major studio after a few years – it feels like a bit of a comeback, and honestly, it reminded me of all the talk about how things were shifting in pop culture recently. It’s just a really interesting development all around.
As we discussed, Donald Trump is a big fan of Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman. Starting December 1st, several Batman films will be available to stream on Paramount+.
Paramount and Warner Bros. are now working together on a new Rush Hour project. This collaboration is said to have happened after Donald Trump suggested Paramount Skydance should be the one to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery.
More below.
Paramount and Warner Bros. Join Forces at a Critical Moment
According to Deadline, Paramount will distribute the latest Rush Hour movie for Warner Bros., earning a significant percentage of the revenue. This is a surprising arrangement considering Paramount’s owner, David Ellison, is currently trying to buy Warner Bros. Discovery.
This is also one of the earliest projects to come from the new partnership between Paramount and Warner Bros., following Ellison’s leadership at the studio.
Several film studios initially declined to distribute the movie, including New Line Cinema – the company that originally launched the series and made Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker famous worldwide. While the three films earned a total of $850 million globally, director Brett Ratner’s career setbacks put the project on hold for many years.
Tucker and Chan Returning for Rush Hour 4
Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are reuniting for a new movie, marking their first on-screen pairing since 2007’s Rush Hour 3. The Rush Hour series, which began in 1998, is a hugely popular and successful blend of action and comedy.
According to Deadline, this film has been in development since 2024. The original producer, Arthur Sarkissian, has remained involved throughout the process, and Tarak Ben Ammar of Eagle Pictures controls the film’s rights.
Ratner’s Controversial Return
After several accusations of sexual misconduct in 2017 – which he disputed – Ratner was effectively blacklisted by Hollywood. He filed a defamation lawsuit against one of his accusers, but the case was eventually settled out of court. Following these events, no major film studio would work with him on any projects.
He returned to filmmaking earlier this year when Amazon bought his documentary about Melania Trump, which was set to be released in theaters on January 30th. This deal helped him start working on new projects again.
Trump’s Reported Role Behind the Scenes
I read an interesting report on Semafor yesterday – apparently, Donald Trump actually reached out to the Ellisons and encouraged them to make another Rush Hour movie! The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the story, and it seems like this happened while Paramount and Skydance were both trying to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. It’s wild to think about the former president getting involved in movie pitches!
Trump allegedly asked for the movie Bloodsport to be brought back, as part of his broader effort to shape what’s popular in entertainment.
