‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Cast Opens Up About Sawyer Sweeten’s Suicide: ‘We Miss Him’

The stars of “Everybody Loves Raymond” came together to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary on CBS and Paramount+. During the special, they fondly remembered their late co-star, Sawyer Sweeten, who tragically passed away in 2015. Sawyer played one of the Barone kids on the show, alongside his twin siblings Sullivan and Madylin Sweeten.

At the cast reunion, the actors reminisced about their time working together. Sullivan Sweeten, who played Sawyer’s twin, remembered having a lot of fun on set, specifically playing tag in the bleachers and the prop room. He described his brother as a cheerful and energetic person, just as fans remember him.

Sullivan emphasized the importance of remembering happy times. “I really try to focus on the good moments, and a lot of those happen right here on set,” he said.

Madylin Sweeten emphasized the need to talk freely about mental health and how to prevent crises. She shared that her family is deeply committed to suicide prevention, noting it’s the second leading cause of death for young adults aged 18 to 25. However, she also pointed out that treatment is effective, with a 90% recovery rate for those who seek help.

Ray Romano, known for his role as Ray Barone, shared his thoughts on the legacy of Peter Sawyer, noting how much the cast misses him. Madylin added that fans have been reaching out, expressing gratitude for the stories about Sawyer and sharing how he positively impacted their lives, with some even saying he helped save them.

The Sweeten family supports the National Suicide Prevention Hotline both by volunteering and by fundraising. Each year, they sell “Sawyer” t-shirts, and all the money raised goes directly to the hotline, Madylin explained.

The ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ 30th-anniversary reunion special aired on CBS November 24th at 8 p.m. and is now available to stream on Paramount+.
