According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson will lead the cast of a new Exorcist movie. Mike Flanagan is writing and directing the film, and it will be produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures.
I’m really excited about Johansson being cast – it feels like the studio is truly committed to revitalizing this classic horror series and giving it a whole new beginning. It shows they’re not just doing the same old thing, and I think that’s fantastic!
Flanagan expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with Johansson, praising her as a remarkably talented actress. He noted that her performances are consistently believable and authentic, whether in action movies or large-scale blockbusters, and he’s thrilled she’s joined the cast of the new Exorcist film.
This new story takes place within the world of The Exorcist, but it’s completely separate from the 2023 film The Exorcist: Believer, which didn’t do well in theaters. Believer, directed by David Gordon Green, made $65.5 million domestically and $136.2 million worldwide. Following the film’s disappointing performance, Green left the series, and the studio decided to start the franchise over with Mike Flanagan as the director.
Okay, so the people behind the scenes on this one are really impressive. Alexandra Magistro is executive producing through Red Room Pictures, and David Robinson is handling production for Morgan Creek. Plus, Jason Blum and Ryan Turek from Blumhouse-Atomic Monster are also involved – Jason as a producer and Ryan as an executive producer. It’s a solid team, and I’m excited to see what they come up with!
The story of The Exorcist started with William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel and gained widespread recognition with the 1973 movie version.
The original film has spawned several prequels and sequels, but none have received the same positive reviews. The story centers on individuals battling possession by the demon Pazuzu, and the attempts by religious figures to stop it. As a whole, the movies have earned over $661 million globally, and the book based on the story has sold more than 13 million copies.
Flanagan’s latest movie tries to revitalize the series, aiming for the same scary and gripping feeling as the first film.
