Joe Mallozzi Responds to Stargate Announcement: ‘Let’s Savor the Moment’

After Amazon revealed they’re making a new Stargate show – and it won’t be a remake of the original – veteran producer Joe Mallozzi has shared his thoughts, though fans will need to be patient for more details.

Mallozzi responded to the enthusiastic questions from fans in a long post on X, but avoided giving direct answers to the main points.

“Not Bad for a Franchise That Aired Its Last Episode 14 Years Ago”

Mallozzi began by acknowledging the massive reaction to the recent announcement. He said the franchise clearly still has a dedicated fanbase, and that the response included a wide range of emotions – excitement, happiness, hope, some worry, and, of course, many questions.

So, everyone was firing off questions, the usual stuff. They wanted to know where they’d be filming the new season, if any old characters would show up, and, of course, what really happened to Destiny and Atlantis. One person even got super specific and asked if the Goa’uld device was ambidextrous – you know, would it work for a leftie too? It was a pretty typical fan Q&A, honestly.

Mallozzi stated plainly that he wouldn’t be answering any questions at this time, saying, “I am unable to address any of these questions.”

A Slow and Steady Rollout

Mallozzi said the reason for the radio silence is simple — timing.

He explained that the news about the new series had just been released and he wanted to give people time to process it. He compared the experience to enjoying a fine wine – a 2011 Leroy Musigny Grand Cru – and asked fans to fully appreciate the complex and delightful experience, like a burst of flavors and sensations that linger and fade beautifully.

According to reports, Martin Gero, the creator and showrunner of the upcoming series, plans to include fans in its development.

Mallozzi explained that the person making the announcement doesn’t want to simply share information and then disappear for months. Instead, they want to keep fans updated and involved throughout the process, as much as possible and in a timely manner.

Mallozzi clarified that although he’ll still be involved behind the scenes, Martin Gero will be the main person in charge. According to Mallozzi, Gero has rightfully earned this leadership role and is best suited to work with Amazon and the media.

Mallozzi promised to keep fans informed with regular updates about the show’s progress, sharing news from both the writing and filming processes.

He’s such a tease! He jokingly admitted I shouldn’t expect him to share those fun, candid glimpses behind the scenes – you know, the hilarious stories about everything from what everyone eats at lunch to wardrobe disasters and even getting lost while scouting locations. He says all that good stuff will come eventually, though, and honestly, that just makes me even more excited!

Mallozzi says the team is still early in the development process, so they can’t share many details without revealing spoilers. However, he assures fans that as development progresses, they’ll be sharing more and more information, and at a quicker rate.

He promised fans they’ll be fully informed about what’s happening. He said they’ll be among the most connected and up-to-date fan groups in science fiction history.

As for that question about the Goa’uld hand device working for left-handed people?

“I mean, I assume it does,” he said. “Why wouldn’t it? What do you think?”
