‘Wicked: For Good’ Box Office Flies By ‘Superman’ With Best Thursday Preview of 2025

The movie Wicked: For Good had a very strong opening night, earning more at its Thursday previews than any other film this year, including James Gunn’s Superman.

Universal Pictures used a preview strategy similar to the one for Superman, showing the film to audiences early in the week to generate excitement. Despite this being a common practice, the preview numbers were still remarkably high.

Wicked: For Good Scores $30.8 Million in Previews

The latest movie in the series made $30.8 million in the US from early showings, surpassing the $22.5 million earned by Superman. This strong start builds on the success of last year’s Wicked, which was a huge hit and created a dedicated following.

Current estimates show that For Good could earn between $112 million and $180 million this weekend. The final amount will depend on how much positive buzz the movie generates and whether most viewers attend showings early in the weekend, given its strong appeal to female audiences.

Rotten Tomatoes Scores Point to a Split Reaction

Viewers really seem to be enjoying the new release, giving it a 97% audience score. Critics are less enthusiastic, with a score of 69%. This is a bit lower than the 88% critics score the previous year’s film, Wicked, received at launch, although fan scores were nearly identical at 95%.

The first movie earned $112.5 million on its opening weekend, eventually grossing $474.9 million in the US and Canada and $758.7 million globally. Universal Pictures is optimistic that the new film, For Good, will perform just as well, based on initial audience numbers.

2025 Box Office Leaders: Where Wicked Could Land

If predictions hold true, the musical Wicked: For Good has the potential to become one of the year’s biggest hits. Currently, the top-performing shows worldwide in 2025 are:

  • Lilo & Stitch at $1 billion
  • A Minecraft Movie at $957.9 million
  • Jurassic World: Rebirth at $868.8 million
  • How to Train Your Dragon at $636.2 million
  • F1: The Movie at $631.3 million
  • Superman at $616.6 million

The musical For Good has had a very strong start, and could become a major hit if it maintains its momentum and performs well internationally.

About Wicked: For Good

Directed by Jon M. Chu, who recently had success with last year’s hit film, Wicked: For Good stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater as Boq.

This second film picks up after the falling out between Elphaba and Glinda, escalating their conflict as the land of Oz begins to fall apart. The story follows their separate journeys, the growing political unrest in Oz, and the events leading to the climactic showdown hinted at in the first movie. Universal describes this installment as the emotional culmination of the two-part story, bringing the characters to a point of no return.
