The new DC series, Lanterns, won’t be released until late summer of 2026. You’ll be able to watch it on HBO and stream it on HBO Max.
Casey Bloys, the company’s CEO, revealed this information at an event in New York City on Thursday. They will share the official release date at a later time.
The series centers around space law enforcement officers Hal Jordan and John Stewart, portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre. Their investigation into a murder in the American Midwest leads them into a complex and shadowy mystery. The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion.
Okay, so I just heard about this new DC show, Lanterns, and it’s really exciting! It got picked up for a full season – eight episodes, to be exact – without even a pilot! Even cooler, it’s going to be part of the very first wave of shows launching the new DC Universe, which they’re calling ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.’ I’m already hyped to see what they do with it.
Originally, the series was planned to launch in early 2026, potentially alongside the Supergirl movie. But, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lanterns will actually premiere after Supergirl, and HBO has now confirmed it won’t arrive until late summer 2026.
The show uses a detective-focused style, similar to series like True Detective and Slow Horses. Development on a Green Lantern series started with Greg Berlanti in 2019, but was reworked after James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios in 2022. HBO officially greenlit the series in mid-2024, with Mundy, Lindelof, and King as its creators.
James Hawes directed the initial two episodes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also taking on directing roles. The pilot and overall series plan were written by Carlton Cuse, Meredith Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Kevin King by May 2024. Writers Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson, and Vanessa Baden collaborated with the cast, prioritizing a deep understanding of the characters over strict adherence to any particular comic book timeframe. Filming occurred in Los Angeles between February and July.
