A judge threw out a lawsuit accusing Vin Diesel of assault, deciding that the laws of California don’t cover events that reportedly happened in Georgia. News outlets reported on the dismissal Wednesday.
In 2023, Vin Diesel’s former assistant, Asta Jonasson, filed a lawsuit alleging s assault. She claimed that in 2010, while Diesel was filming Fast Five in Atlanta, he forced unwanted physical contact with her in his hotel room. Jonasson also stated that Diesel’s sister fired her just hours later. She had only been working for Diesel for nine days at the time.
Judge Daniel M. Crowley initially threw out four of Jonasson’s ten lawsuits because they were filed too late. Then, on Wednesday, he dismissed the remaining six, stating he didn’t have the authority to hear those cases.
The judge stated that everyone agrees the alleged assault happened in Atlanta, Georgia. However, the legal claim is invalid because California laws generally don’t apply to incidents that occur outside of California unless the state legislature specifically says they do.
A California law passed in 2022, called the S Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, briefly allowed some older s assault cases—specifically those from 2009 onward—to be reopened. However, a judge decided this law only applies to incidents that occurred within California, not elsewhere.
Jonasson’s legal team announced they will be appealing the court’s decision. They clarified that the court didn’t make any judgment on whether Ms. Jonasson’s claims were true or false. Instead, the ruling was based on a minor legal issue, and they believe the court was incorrect. Ms. Jonasson plans to fight the decision through an appeal.
Bryan Freedman, Diesel’s lawyer, immediately refuted the claims. He stated, “We’re thankful the court dismissed this baseless lawsuit,” and added, “We’re happy this issue is now completely resolved.”
