Okay, so I’m a big movie fan, and I gotta say, Sydney Sweeney’s new boxing flick, Christy, is really struggling. It opened in a ton of theaters – over 2,000! – but the opening weekend numbers were shockingly low, and unfortunately, the second weekend was even worse. It’s not looking good, honestly.
Okay, so I was checking the box office numbers, and “Christy” actually opened to around $1.2 million, which isn’t bad. But here’s the crazy part – it totally plummeted in its second weekend, making just $108,000! That’s a massive 92% drop. Apparently, according to World of Reel, that’s the biggest second-weekend fall ever for a movie playing in a lot of theaters. Seriously, that’s a huge hit to ticket sales.
Christy had a very poor opening weekend, ranking among the 12 lowest of all time for films released in over 2,000 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.
The film has received a mixed response from critics. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 65% of 156 critics gave it a positive rating.
Despite some issues with its overall tone and emotional depth, the movie Christy is still worth watching, largely due to Sydney Sweeney’s impressive performance. The film blends fantastical elements with a very personal and realistic story. Critics gave it a Metascore of 60, indicating generally mixed reviews, while audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave it a B+.
Following its festival debut, Glenn Garner of Deadline Hollywood noted that while some critics applauded Jake Sweeney’s immersive performance as a boxer, others felt that was the film’s only strong point.
Sonia Rao, writing for The Washington Post, rated the film 2 out of 4 stars. She described it as an ordinary biopic that doesn’t effectively highlight what makes Christy’s story unique.

In a review for Slant Magazine, Marshall Shaffer found the film to be fairly predictable, noting it follows a typical formula for inspirational sports movies. However, he also pointed out that the beginning of the film subtly hints at future challenges, which become more prominent as the main character’s career starts to decline.
Robert Abele, writing for the Los Angeles Times, praised the acting of Sweeney but found the movie disappointing. He felt it needed a more realistic and raw approach, stating that it focused too much on dramatic peaks and valleys and lacked the subtle details that make a boxing match – and the struggle to overcome adversity – truly compelling.
Despite strong reviews for Sydney Sweeney’s acting, the movie ‘Christy’ isn’t doing well in theaters and has received negative feedback from critics.
