‘Wicked: For Good’ Sets Sights on This 2025 Box Office Record

The movie “Wicked” is returning to theaters with a new film, “Wicked: For Good,” and is predicted to be a big hit when it opens.

Experts predict the movie “Wicked: For Good” could make between $150 million and $180 million during its opening weekend in North America, playing in about 4,000 theaters.

If it performs at the higher end of expectations, this will be the biggest movie opening of 2025 yet, exceeding the $162 million debut of A Minecraft Movie in April and the $146 million opening of the Lilo & Stitch remake in May.

The first “Wicked” movie earned $112.5 million over the Thanksgiving weekend, which was a new record for films based on stage musicals.

Universal Pictures, the studio making the movies, now predicts the second film will earn around $125 million or more. Industry insiders point out that initial expectations for the first film were even higher – some predicted over $130 million – but it ultimately grossed a very strong $112.5 million.

Most experts believe the sequel will be successful, as audiences are already familiar with the story and it’s expected to finish the tale of Elphaba and Glinda.

Despite the huge anticipation for “Wicked: For Good”, two more new movies are coming out this weekend. Sony’s action thriller, Sisu: Road to Revenge, is predicted to make around $3 million from 2,100 theaters, similar to the $3.3 million earned by the first film last year. From Searchlight, the dramedy Rental Family features Brendan Fraser as an actor who fills in for people in everyday situations in Japan, and is expected to earn a few million dollars from 1,900 theaters.
