Fans are eagerly awaiting the release of ‘Welcome to Derry’ Episode 5, as the show delves further into the origins of Pennywise. This new episode will bring the story closer to a showdown between the military and those protecting Derry’s hidden truths, and will also tie the prequel’s events into the larger world Stephen King has created.
It: Welcome to Derry episode 5 global release timings and how to watch
The fifth episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ will be available on HBO Max starting Sunday, November 23rd at 6 PM Pacific Time / 9 PM Eastern Time. If you’re watching from outside the US, you might need to stay up late or wait until the next day to avoid seeing spoilers. In the UK, you can watch on Sky Max and NowTV, and it will be re-aired on Monday, November 24th at 9 PM.
The first season has eight episodes. Although HBO hasn’t confirmed a second season yet, director Andy Muschietti has revealed plans for three seasons in total. He says season two will take place in 1935, and the finale of season one will explain why the show needs to move backwards in time for the following seasons. Muschietti also mentioned the team intends to delve into the Macroverse, the ancient dimension connected to It, which the original book only showed through the characters’ perspectives.
Here’s what happened in It: Welcome to Derry episode 4
In the fourth episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ Dick Hallorann uses his psychic ability, called the Shine, to explore the memories of Taniel. Taniel belongs to a group that keeps secrets about Pennywise and helps Dick navigate through a series of flashbacks.
Rose remembers teaching Taniel about the Galloo, a creature from local Indigenous legends connected to the Western Wood. This memory mirrors the first appearance of Pennywise in Derry, much like Stephen King originally wrote. The Galloo is revealed to be Pennywise – an incredibly old being that came to Earth from another world.
Local Indigenous people managed to survive by staying away from the creature’s territory and crafted a weapon from the meteorite that originally brought it to Earth. Later, they created thirteen pieces of the meteorite to imprison Pennywise in Derry. The show’s creators worked with Indigenous advisors to ensure this part of the story was accurate and respectful.
In the final moments of Episode 4, Taniel shares where the meteorite pieces are hidden, instructing Dick to search the tunnels beneath the old well. A flashback reveals the Neibolt Street house, which connects directly to Pennywise’s underground lair. With this knowledge, the military now has a clear path to reach Pennywise, paving the way for the events of Episode 5 in It: Welcome to Derry.
