Edgar Wright recently explained to Josh Horowitz the reasons behind his departure from the Marvel Studios film, Ant-Man.
Wright explained that by the time he came back to the project, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had established a distinct look and approach that didn’t feel like a good fit for his creative vision.
He described how, after eight years of developing the idea for Ant-Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had established a specific style and filmmaking approach. He realized he couldn’t create Ant-Man in the same way he’d made earlier films like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or The Running Man. The established ‘formula’ for Marvel movies, both in terms of story continuity and visual style, meant a different approach was necessary.
Despite Edgar Wright’s departure, Peyton Reed directed the first Ant-Man movie, which went on to gross over $519 million globally. Critics largely praised the film for being a more intimate story within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as its humor, impressive visual effects, and the excellent acting by Paul Rudd, Michael Peña, Evangeline Lilly, and Michael Douglas.
The Ant-Man movie has been followed by two sequels: Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). Many critics believe the original Ant-Man is one of the best Marvel films due to its distinctive style and storytelling.
