[New Look] Yahya Abdul-Mateen II: ‘Wonder Man’ Show Is Self-Aware—and Ready to Roast Superhero Fatigue

Marvel is preparing to launch Wonder Man on Disney+, and the show promises to be unlike anything seen so far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest created the show, with Guest also serving as its showrunner. The series is inspired by a Marvel Comics character and will be a part of Marvel Studios’ television projects, produced in association with Family Owned and Onyx Collective.

The series centers around Simon Williams, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is more than just the hero Wonder Man. The show depicts him as an actor auditioning for the main role in a new film about Wonder Man. Having been a fan of the original movie growing up, Simon is now hoping to become the next face of the character.

Plus, he may possess powers similar to Wonder Man, making things even more interesting. The series also revisits the character of Trevor Slattery, with Sir Ben Kingsley reprising his role, as he and Simon attempt to revive their acting careers.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen recently discussed what sets the new series apart, explaining that it has a unique tone compared to previous Marvel projects. He described it as something ‘fresh’ and ‘a bit tongue-in-cheek,’ meaning it’s self-aware and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The show is a playful look at the world of superheroes and the Hollywood machine, offering both satire and a surprisingly realistic storyline. While it touches on themes like superhero fatigue, according to actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, that’s not the central focus of the narrative.

He described the show as cleverly acknowledging its own genre without breaking the fourth wall. While it will touch on the idea that audiences might be getting tired of superhero stories, he emphasized that these elements are secondary. The core of the show, he explained, is a story about an actor’s personal growth and the power of friendship.

Following other recent Marvel projects that have experimented with different genres like political thrillers and retro sci-fi, Wonder Man brings a fresh, lighter tone to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a playful and quirky story with plenty of self-aware humor, but it remains focused on genuine character development.
