Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig are already planning the next Knives Out film. At the premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery in Los Angeles, Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter he’s excited to keep making these movies after completing the current one.
“Wake Up Dead Man” is the newest book in a popular mystery series that started in 2019. The series later became a Netflix original with a two-book deal.
Johnson shared that working on the new film has sparked his creativity. He mentioned, “I’m feeling really energized creatively after this project. Daniel and I are already brainstorming ideas for a potential sequel.”
He also likes to introduce fresh faces and tell a unique story with each movie. He explained, “As long as we can continue making them, I don’t see any reason to stop.”
Daniel Craig is back as Detective Benoit Blanc, solving a mysterious case at a small church in rural New York.
The third movie features a brand new cast, including stars like Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, and Daryl McCormack. Director Rian Johnson enjoys each film because it allows him to collaborate with different actors on a new mystery.
The film delves into topics of religion and what’s right and wrong. Josh O’Connor, who portrays a young priest, found the role relatable because of his own Catholic background. He explained, “Having grown up Catholic, the character felt very familiar to me.”
To truly understand his character’s gentle and caring nature, he even spoke with an actual priest during his preparation for the role.
Director Rian Johnson says the Knives Out movies use mystery stories to explore important real-world problems. The first film focused on immigration, and the latest one examines the potential for religion to be exploited.
Johnson expressed his satisfaction with the recent statement made by the bishops regarding the administration’s immigration policies. He highlighted the cruelty and inhumanity of the current approach, emphasizing its conflict with Christian values. Johnson also pointed out that these issues are fundamentally about human dignity, extending beyond religious concerns.
