Good news for fans of Alita: Battle Angel! James Cameron recently told Empire magazine that he and Robert Rodriguez are definitely planning to make more films and continue the story.
James Cameron revealed that he and Robert Rodriguez have promised each other to create at least one more Alita movie. They’re even considering a plan that could lead to a third film, though they would be happy with just one additional installment, and they are currently working towards making it happen.
He also thanked fans for their loyalty. “I appreciate the loyalty of the Alita fans,” he added.
Cameron has been busy with the movie Avatar: Fire and Ash, but now that he’s living in Austin, Texas, close to Robert Rodriguez, he feels he can dedicate more attention to Alita. He told Empire that with his new home just a few miles from Rodriguez, they’ll likely start working on it more seriously once he finishes post-production on Avatar in a few weeks.
I was really excited when Alita: Battle Angel came out in 2019! It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, but James Cameron and Jon Landau were the producers, which made me hopeful it would be amazing. It’s based on the Battle Angel Alita manga, and it tells the story of this incredible cyborg, Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, who wakes up with no memories. The cast was fantastic too – you’ve got Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson all in it!
The movie Alita had been in development for a long time. James Cameron first revealed plans to adapt it in 2003, but the project faced numerous delays, especially because of his commitment to Avatar and its follow-up films. Robert Rodriguez signed on as director in 2016, and Rosa Salazar was cast soon after. Most of the filming happened at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas, between October 2016 and February 2017.
The film debuted in London on January 31, 2019, and in the US on February 14th, eventually earning $405 million globally – making it director Rodriguez’s most successful film to date. While reviews from critics were mixed, fans have been eagerly requesting a follow-up ever since.
After the film came out, a legal dispute arose. Epic Stone Group, a company from Florida, filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox, claiming they had rights to the name Battle Angel. However, the case was ultimately dropped.
