A lot of zombie comedies come out, but a few really shine. Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland are definitely among the best – they’re funny and have plenty of classic zombie gore. Zombieland: Double Tap managed to recapture that magic, which is rare for a sequel. Now, director Ruben Fleischer is planning another installment, Zombieland 3, with a hopeful release date in 2029.
He shared this information in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. It fits with the pattern of the previous films, which were released in 2009 and 2019. While a ten-year gap is a long time, anything can happen in the movie business.
According to Fleischer, the cast and crew frequently discuss making another Zombieland movie. Last month marked the 16th anniversary of the original, prompting an email exchange where everyone voiced their enthusiasm for a sequel. They’ve always planned for a ten-year gap between films – the second movie came out in 2019, a decade after the first – so the target release date is 2029. While they have some time, Fleischer emphasized the need to start planning soon.
Considering the disruptions happening in production, like strikes and unexpected issues, it might be a good idea for them to begin planning Zombieland 3 soon. You never know what could happen before the end of this unpredictable decade, and we certainly hope we won’t be facing a real-life apocalypse by then.
