Director Joseph Kosinski has revealed that a follow-up to the popular film Top Gun: Maverick is in development. He also told Variety that discussions are underway for a sequel to his movie F1.
Released in 2022, the first Top Gun: Maverick saw Tom Cruise reprise his role as Navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
The movie centers on Maverick as he mentors a group of young Top Gun pilots, including the son of his deceased friend, preparing them for a challenging assignment. The film stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and features Val Kilmer in what would be his last on-screen performance.
The idea for a sequel has been discussed for many years. Back in 2010, Paramount Pictures officially announced they were planning a follow-up to the 1986 film, and Tom Cruise, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and director Tony Scott were all expected to be involved.
The screenplay was first written in 2012, but the project was put on hold after Scott passed away. It was revived in 2017 when Joseph Kosinski signed on as director. Filming then took place from May 2018 to April 2019, with crews shooting in California, Washington, and Maryland using special IMAX-certified cameras that captured footage in 6K resolution.
The movie’s release was pushed back because of difficult stunt work and the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite receiving offers to release it directly on streaming services, Tom Cruise was determined to have it shown in theaters.
Top Gun: Maverick first showed at CinemaCon in April 2022 and then opened in US theaters on May 27th. Critics loved the movie, and many thought it was even better than the first Top Gun.
The film received six Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, and won the award for Best Sound. It was a huge commercial success, earning $1.496 billion globally – making it Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film and the second highest-grossing movie of 2022. Its performance demonstrated that releasing films in theaters could still be a profitable strategy, even when the movie industry faced difficulties.
The news from Kosinski follows an earlier report from actor Miles Teller, who in 2022 shared his idea for a Top Gun sequel called Top Gun: Rooster, centered around his character. Teller also said he’d been talking with Tom Cruise about the possibility. More recently, in May, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie let it be known that he’s currently developing Top Gun 3.
