I just got out of seeing James Gunn’s Superman, and the big question everyone’s asking is how it stacks up against Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel. I think it’s safe to say this new take, with David Corenswet stepping into the role, has been a real success. It kicked off the new DC Universe with a bang, and the box office numbers, especially here in the U.S., definitely prove people were excited to see it.
Worldwide, Superman grossed $615.2 million, according to The Numbers. In the U.S., the film made $354 million, placing it among the top 73 highest-grossing movies of all time. It earned $262 million internationally, which was $92 million less than its domestic earnings.
The movie cost around $225 million to make (not including advertising) and needed to earn between $450 and $562 million worldwide to cover its costs. It easily exceeded that amount. According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery is projected to make about $125 million in theater profits from the film. A sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, is already planned and is scheduled to begin filming next year, with a release date of July 9, 2027.
As a film buff, I immediately noticed everyone drawing comparisons between this new movie and 2013’s Man of Steel – the film that really kicked off the original DCEU. If you’re curious about its success, Man of Steel pulled in about $670.1 million globally, with $291 million coming from US theaters and another $379.1 million from international audiences. It’s interesting to see how this new release stacks up against that benchmark.
When accounting for inflation and the cost of making the film, the earnings look different. Within the United States, the movie brought in around $419.1 million, and globally it earned an estimated $798.2 million—potentially reaching $868.2 million with a few adjustments for different markets. Warner Bros. was said to have profited $42.7 million from Man of Steel.
Zack Snyder recently showed support for a social media post that compared how well the new Superman movie and Man of Steel performed in theaters, proving that fans are still debating which film was more of a hit.

Both Superman and Man of Steel were successful films when they were released. While James Gunn’s Superman did well in theaters and launched the new DC Universe, Man of Steel continues to perform strongly when looking at its numbers adjusted for inflation. It’s great to see the new DCU starting off so well, and it will be interesting to see how Superman (also known as Man of Tomorrow) does moving forward.
