When the public eye was focused on them, several pioneering transgender individuals made the deliberate choice to withdraw from public life. These decisions were often driven by concerns for their safety, well-being, or a wish to focus on new career paths outside of the spotlight. These stories, which come from fields like sports, fashion, music, and politics, demonstrate that choosing to step back can be a powerful way to regain control, not simply a withdrawal. The following examples highlight specific achievements and results to illustrate what this process looked like in reality.
April Ashley

April Ashley was a pioneering British model who gained significant recognition in magazines after undergoing surgery in 1960. However, a newspaper revealed her past in 1961, leading to the immediate cancellation of her modeling contracts. She then moved away from London, living in Spain and France and working outside the fashion industry. Years later, she returned to the UK, dedicating her time to advocacy and education rather than returning to the runway.
Renée Richards

In the late 1970s, Renée Richards successfully sued to be allowed to compete as a woman in professional tennis, gaining international attention during her several seasons on tour. She eventually retired from competition in the early 1980s to return to her career as an eye doctor, and later coached at a high level. Her retirement marked the end of a very public and groundbreaking period in her life.
Balian Buschbaum

Balian Buschbaum was a highly successful pole vaulter for Germany, achieving national championships and competing internationally. He retired in 2007 due to injuries and later came out as transgender. This decision brought an end to his athletic career, which included representing the national team and consistently competing for championships. After retiring from competition, Buschbaum became a coach and motivational speaker, stepping away from the demands of professional sports.
Harrison Browne

I was so inspired by Harrison Browne! He was a phenomenal hockey player in the National Women’s Hockey League, and incredibly brave to come out as a transgender athlete while still playing. Seeing him win the Isobel Cup with the Buffalo Beauts was amazing, and he quickly became a really important voice for the league. It was sad to see him retire in 2018, but he was at the top of his game and wanted to dedicate himself to helping his community and working on media projects – a truly admirable decision. He left a real legacy.
Fallon Fox

Fallon Fox publicly came out as transgender in 2013 while maintaining a perfect record as a mixed martial artist. This announcement led to significant attention and debate from those involved in the sport, including promoters, fighters, and governing bodies. She fought a few more times before retiring in 2014 with just one loss in her professional career. During a time of intense public discussion about her career, she shifted her focus to advocacy and consulting, stepping away from active competition.
Wendy Carlos

Wendy Carlos became world-famous with her album ‘Switched On Bach’ and went on to write music for films like ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘The Shining’. Even as her popularity and awards grew, she deliberately avoided public appearances and rarely gave interviews. Instead, Carlos focused on recording in the studio, exploring new technologies, and photography, preferring to stay out of the spotlight while continuing to create a lot of work. This choice meant fewer public appearances but allowed her creative output to flourish.
Christine Jorgensen

Christine Jorgensen gained international recognition in the early 1950s when she returned to the U.S. after undergoing surgery in Denmark. She balanced performing in nightclubs and giving talks with constant media coverage. By the mid-1960s, she reduced her entertainment work and concentrated on lecturing and writing, taking fewer prominent jobs. This allowed her to establish a more private life after years of being a public figure.
Geena Rocero

Geena Rocero had a thriving modeling career in New York City, but in 2014, she publicly came out as transgender in a well-known speech. After this, she focused on creating documentaries and working with nonprofit organizations. She scaled back her modeling work to dedicate herself to projects that captured the stories and experiences of transgender people and communities. This change transformed her established career as a model into full-time work in media production and activism.
Caroline Tula Cossey

After a brief role in a James Bond film, Cossey found herself back in the tabloids, with attention focused on her modeling work in ‘For Your Eyes Only’. This unwanted publicity made it difficult to get consistent work. She moved away and decided to focus on legal studies and education instead of pursuing a career in fashion. Ironically, this happened at the peak of her public recognition.
Georgina Beyer

Georgina Beyer had a diverse career, starting as a performer and mayor before becoming a Member of Parliament in New Zealand. During her time in Parliament, she became internationally known for her work on new laws and for breaking new ground as a politician. She left Parliament in 2007 due to health and personal concerns, and afterwards dedicated her time to working with communities and public speaking. Her departure from national politics marked the end of a period when she was a very public figure.
