Ryan Coogler has confirmed he’s returning to direct the third Black Panther movie. While discussing his new film, Sinners, he told Deadline that Black Panther 3 is his next project, playfully admitting he’s already working hard on it despite usually being evasive about future plans.
Coogler jokingly said he’d normally give a standard ‘no comment’ response, but then confirmed they are indeed actively working on the next film. He essentially admitted it’s happening.
The news comes after an online listing suggested the next Marvel film would be called Shadows of Wakanda. Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed the title, but the timing fits with director Ryan Coogler’s plans to start working on the third film in the Black Panther series.
There’s speculation that Damson Idris could be cast as the new Black Panther in upcoming Marvel movies, Avengers: Doomsday and/or Secret Wars. Some believe he might play T’Challa’s son, Toussaint, a character who debuted in Wakanda Forever. Concept art for Avengers reportedly includes a figure resembling Toussaint (seen above).

Denzel Washington’s Possible Role
Denzel Washington has revealed he’ll be in Black Panther 3. He accidentally mentioned in an interview late last year that director Ryan Coogler was creating a role specifically for him in the film.
Coogler confirmed this, meaning Washington is being considered for a significant part as the project develops. While nothing is definite, sources say Marvel is looking for a well-known actor to lead the future of Wakanda’s stories.

Returning to a Franchise Built on Chadwick Boseman
This latest film builds on the story that started with Chadwick Boseman in 2018. Boseman’s portrayal of T’Challa was a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he appeared in films like Civil War, Black Panther, Infinity War, and Endgame. Director Ryan Coogler views this new movie as the final chapter in a trilogy that Boseman started.
Although Marvel hasn’t announced when production will begin or who will star, director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that Black Panther 3 is officially in development and is a high priority for the studio.
