This week on Peacock, you’ll find a variety of movies, from the latest installments in popular series to beloved family classics. Many people are revisiting holiday favorites and animated hits, alongside the new releases. We’ve included quick summaries for each film – details about the cast, where it fits in the franchise, and what the movie is about – to help you easily choose your next watch.
‘Jurassic Park’ (1993)

Steven Spielberg’s iconic film brings Michael Crichton’s thrilling novel to life, depicting a theme park populated by cloned dinosaurs on the island of Isla Nublar. The movie was groundbreaking for its time, seamlessly blending practical effects created by Stan Winston Studio with early computer-generated imagery from ILM to create believable dinosaurs like the T. rex and Velociraptors. John Williams’s memorable score, the clever ‘Mr. DNA’ explanation, and the park’s security features—such as electric fences and embryo storage—all became defining elements of the franchise. The film’s huge popularity led to multiple sequels, theme park rides, and, decades later, the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy.
‘The Cat in the Hat’ (2003)

Mike Myers plays the iconic Cat in this movie, which brings the beloved children’s book to life. The story follows the Cat’s wild visit to a family’s home, creating hilarious chaos. The filmmakers used impressive sets, giant props, and special effects to capture the colorful, imaginative style of the book. It’s a classic choice for family movie nights during school vacations and holidays.
‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ (2025)

As a big fan of ‘Downton Abbey,’ I’m excited to see the story continue with this new film! It picks up after the events of the previous two movies, following the Crawley family and all the staff at Downton. The whole thing started as a TV show by Julian Fellowes, and what I always loved was how carefully he recreated the period and wove together the lives of everyone, both the family and the servants. This film really leans into what made the earlier ones so great – bringing back all the familiar faces and filming at those gorgeous locations. The costumes and sets are, as always, incredibly detailed and really transport you back to the early 1900s. It’s great to see the same team handling the distribution too – they clearly know what fans like me are looking for.
‘The Grinch’ (2018)

This new animated movie features Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the Grinch. It’s a fresh take on the classic story, created with Illumination’s bright and colorful style. While it still includes the main parts of the original – the Grinch’s plan to steal Christmas and his friendship with Cindy Lou Who – it adds more funny characters and visual jokes to appeal to families. The animation is full of expressive characters and beautiful, snowy scenes, making it a perfect movie to watch every holiday season. It’s quickly become a popular choice for streaming during the holidays, alongside other versions of the Grinch story.
‘The Croods’ (2013)

The Croods is a funny and adventurous animated movie from DreamWorks about a prehistoric family leaving their cave and facing a world that’s changing. Featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds, the film blends physical comedy with a journey of discovery. It’s known for its vibrant creatures and imaginative designs, all brought to life with impressive computer animation. The movie was so popular it led to a sequel and a television series, expanding the Croods into a full-fledged franchise.
‘Despicable Me 2’ (2013)

In the second movie, Gru transforms from a bad guy into a hero when the Anti-Villain League asks him to help fight a new enemy. Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig are back, and the Minions have a much larger part to play, eventually leading to their own movies. The film keeps the same colorful, cartoonish style and quick humor as the first one. It solidified the series as a popular and successful family franchise, performing well in both theaters and at home.
‘Despicable Me’ (2010)

The animated hit Despicable Me first introduced audiences to Gru, a super-villain with a change of heart after adopting three orphaned girls, and his hilarious helpers, the Minions. The film, directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, features a bright, cartoonish visual style and a fast-paced story that appeals to families. Its popularity launched a series of sequels and spin-offs, and solidified a long-term partnership between Illumination and Universal Pictures for distributing films worldwide.
‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ (2000)

As a huge movie fan, I always enjoy checking out the live-action ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ directed by Ron Howard. It’s based on the classic Dr. Seuss book, and Jim Carrey is fantastic as the Grinch, even with all that incredible makeup! The story really focuses on why the Grinch is so grumpy, and his unexpected connection with little Cindy Lou Who. What I always appreciated was how much they actually built – the sets for Mount Crumpit and Whoville were amazing and really brought that whimsical world to life. It’s become a real holiday tradition, and I always see it popping up on streaming services when December rolls around.
‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ (2025)

This latest installment continues the story of dinosaurs brought back to life and their conflicts with humans, a tale told throughout the long-running ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Jurassic World’ series. The films are famous for their impressive visuals, created using a combination of real-life effects and advanced computer imagery, originally developed by Industrial Light & Magic and Stan Winston Studio. The core of the story revolves around genetic engineering, failed attempts to create dinosaur theme parks, and thrilling adventures where characters try to survive encounters with velociraptors and different types of T. rex. Like previous films in the series, this one will be released in theaters worldwide before becoming available on streaming platforms through Universal.
‘Nobody 2’ (2025)

The new movie continues the story of Hutch Mansell, played by Bob Odenkirk, a seemingly ordinary dad with a hidden past as a skilled operative. The original film, ‘Nobody,’ released in 2021 and written by Derek Kolstad (known for his work on the ‘John Wick’ movies), delivered fast-paced action and a dark sense of humor. This sequel promises to delve deeper into the world of espionage hinted at in the first film, while also keeping the focus on Hutch’s family. It’s being produced by Universal Pictures and 87North, a production company known for its impressive action sequences.
