Sharknado Returns as ‘Sharknado Origins’ Heads Into Production

The famously cheesy Sharknado movie series is making a comeback! Variety reports that a seventh film, called Sharknado Origins, is in the works, bringing the wild combination of sharks and tornadoes back to screens after a seven-year hiatus.

Production on the next installment of The Asylum is scheduled to begin later this year, with original director Anthony Ferrante back at the helm. While the cast hasn’t been revealed yet, the movie is currently aiming for a summer 2026 release.

A Prequel With Teen Fin and April

As the title suggests, Sharknado Origins is a prequel to the 2013 Syfy movie that became a huge cultural hit. The film shows us how Fin and April – characters originally played by Ian Ziering and Tara Reid in six films – first met as teenagers.

The story begins with a classic summer romance, as Fin and his new love interest meet, connect, and fall for each other on the beach. Just when Fin is about to take their relationship to the next level with a promise ring, a terrifying storm appears, bringing with it an unprecedented threat: sharks are pulled from the ocean by a tornado. The studio playfully notes that there’s no better backdrop for a budding romance than flying sharks!

The Legacy of a B-Movie Sensation

The first Sharknado movie was made on a tiny $1 million budget, but it unexpectedly became a huge pop culture phenomenon. Its silly concept and the buzz it created on social media led to five sequels, several related projects, and appearances by a surprising number of celebrities, including Olivia Newton-John, Al Roker, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jerry Springer, Ann Coulter, Jackie Collins, George R.R. Martin, and David Hasselhoff.

The Sharknado series was most popular with Sharknado 2, attracting almost 4 million viewers on Syfy and establishing it as a classic of over-the-top, cheesy disaster films. The Last Sharknado came out in 2018 and was promoted as the final installment—but it turns out that’s not quite true.
