Disney Embraces AI: CEO Says Streaming Platform Will Be Packed With New Tech

Disney+ is getting a significant overhaul, according to CEO Bob Iger. He announced during a recent earnings call that the streaming service will receive its largest update since its 2019 launch, and this change will be powered by artificial intelligence.

During a discussion about combining Disney+ and Hulu, Iger explained that Disney envisions the merged platform becoming a one-stop shop for all things Disney. He added that artificial intelligence will play a key role in making the experience more engaging and personalized.

Bob Iger believes AI will help Disney+ connect with customers and encourage them to visit Disney’s theme parks, hotels, and cruise lines.

There’s a significant potential for growth in the gaming sector, and we’re excited about it. We also believe our data collection and analysis capabilities, combined with AI, can make our service more valuable and attractive to users.

Much of this effort stems from Disney’s recent $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games. According to Iger, the benefits of this partnership will primarily be seen within Epic Games’ platform, but Disney also intends to incorporate “game-like features” into Disney+. While he didn’t detail exactly what these features will be, he suggested that simple games featuring Disney characters are a likely possibility.

Iger also discussed new features that will allow Disney+ subscribers to create and share their own short videos. He mentioned the possibility of users making content similar to ‘Stitch,’ and emphasized Disney’s enthusiasm for letting fans express themselves creatively on the platform. He added that Disney is currently in talks with other companies to make this happen, but wants to ensure any deals protect Disney’s intellectual property.

Disney hasn’t announced when these new features will be available, but they’ve indicated that AI tools, games, and content created by users are now key parts of their strategy for streaming.
