Labubu, a popular collection of uniquely adorable and slightly mischievous plush monsters, could be adapted into a movie soon.
Sony Pictures is planning to make a movie based on a popular Chinese toy brand, with plans to potentially create a whole series of films. The project is in its early stages, and they haven’t yet chosen a director, producer, or decided if it will be animated or live-action. Sony hasn’t made any official statement about the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Labubu toys were first designed by artist Kasing Lung, who was born in Hong Kong and now lives in Europe, and initially made by How2 Work as part of a series of collectible monster figures. They became truly popular when the Chinese company Pop Mart began selling them in 2019, and their popularity has grown rapidly since then.
Pop Mart’s popularity is fueled by its “blind box” system—customers don’t know which collectible toy they’ll receive until they open the package. This has led to incredibly high demand and a thriving resale market, where rare editions can sell for as much as six figures at auctions and special events.
The popularity of Labubu toys soared in 2024, boosted in part by celebrity endorsements. When K-pop star Lisa of Blackpink was seen with the toys, it greatly increased their visibility. Originally popular in Southeast Asia, Labubu quickly gained a global fanbase, and Pop Mart, the company behind the toys, saw its profits increase by a reported 350 percent earlier this year.
