Paramount is finally making another Star Trek film, and it’s promising to be a fresh take on the franchise, different from previous movies.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited to hear that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley – the guys who brought us the fun of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the recent Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – are taking on a new project. They’re going to be writing, producing, and directing, and it sounds like they’re planning a really interesting, fresh approach to the whole thing.
A Completely New Star Trek Universe
According to Deadline, the new Star Trek movie isn’t connected to any previous films or TV shows, including the Chris Pine-led ‘Kelvin timeline’ movies or any previously planned but cancelled projects. This confirms recent statements from Skydance’s David Ellison, who indicated the film will explore a fresh story rather than continuing the existing storyline with Chris Pine.
According to insiders, the upcoming film will feature entirely new characters and a distinct world, separate from the one established in the Paramount+ series. This suggests Paramount and Skydance are hoping to start fresh with the franchise.
Why Goldstein and Daley Landed the Job
As a big movie fan, I’ve been following the work of directors Goldstein and Daley, and it’s clear they have a knack for taking well-known stories and making them fresh and fun. They really know how to inject humor and energy into big franchises while still keeping the storytelling relatable. Their films, like Spider-Man: Homecoming and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have been huge hits with both audiences and critics, because they manage to strike a great balance between compelling characters, exciting action, and genuinely funny moments.
The actors’ unique energy was a key reason Paramount chose them for the next Star Trek movie. The franchise hasn’t been in theaters since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and has faced several attempts that didn’t pan out. Paramount and Skydance believe their style will revitalize the series and attract a new generation of fans.
Strong Ties To Paramount And Skydance
The pair are off to a strong start with both companies. Their movie, Dungeons & Dragons, was a big hit for Paramount in 2023, and early screenings of their next film, the action-comedy Mayday (produced with Skydance and Apple), have been very positive. It’s scheduled for release in 2025.
Their existing relationship made them the top choice to relaunch Trek on the big screen.
What Happens Next
I’m so excited about the new Star Trek movie! While they’re keeping the story details under wraps for now, it sounds like Paramount is really committed to a fresh start – a whole new cast and a different feel. It’s been a long time coming, with lots of attempts that didn’t pan out, but it seems like they’re finally moving forward and aiming for a vibe similar to what J.J. Abrams and Alex Kurtzman usually do.
More updates should land once the script moves forward and the studio begins casting.
