The directors of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Spider-Man: Homecoming have a knack for adapting popular stories into fun, lighthearted, and action-packed adventures, similar to Marvel movies.

While some fans appreciated that approach, it also undermined the established tone and depth of those shows. Now, it appears Star Trek could face a similar change.

Concerns About Tone

What’s always struck me about Star Trek is how much it focuses on its characters and explores big ideas. Even the newer movies, the Kelvin timeline films, managed to hold onto that heart – it wasn’t just about action, but about who these people were and what they believed in.

Goldstein and Daley’s previous work shows they prefer a different style. They reimagined Dungeons & Dragons as a humorous, space-opera adventure, similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, and it included progressive themes. This approach divided fans, and the movie wasn’t financially successful, earning only $205 million worldwide. Many felt it didn’t treat the source material with respect.

The same comedic style is now being considered for Star Trek. According to sources at Deadline, the proposed approach is described as “fresh” and “fun,” which often means a Marvel-like formula: quick humor, witty remarks even in serious scenes, and a generally less intense emotional tone.

That might work for some audiences, but it’s the opposite of what long-time Trek fans look for.

Similarly, the DC shows Gunn created for HBO Max haven’t performed well. Many fans are growing weary of the overly comedic direction Marvel has taken.
