Pete Townshend is known as one of rock music’s most talented songwriters. While he’s also a capable guitarist, his band’s success was built on his consistently strong and inventive melodies and songwriting.
His music is fantastic – strong enough to be adapted into a complete Broadway musical and still be incredibly effective. The lyrics are excellent, but Townshend has always had a gift for creating songs that are as visually evocative as they are sonically pleasing.
Recently, Pete Townshend shared his favorite songs during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. True to form, he didn’t just talk about music – he used the opportunity to discuss his views on politics, staying consistent with his long-held beliefs.
Pete Townshend breaks down the five best songs he ever wrote
The five standout tracks were “Love, Reign O’er Me,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and “Let My Love Open the Door.” The first four are classic songs by The Who, while the last one comes from Pete Townshend’s 1980 solo album, Empty Glass.
I remember Pete Townshend talking about “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and he actually got into his views on politics. Honestly, if you’ve followed The Who for a while, none of it was really shocking – it pretty much lined up with what he’s always believed.
The guitarist explained that he’s frustrated with politicians who don’t deliver on their promises. He also dislikes being told who to vote for, which inspired his song ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again.’ The song is essentially about the disappointment of putting leaders in power only to have them let you down.
As a longtime fan, I always knew Pete Townshend was incredibly prolific! Beyond The Who, he’s put out seven solo studio albums – the first one came out way back in 1972, and the most recent in 1993. But it doesn’t stop there! He’s also released seven live albums of his solo work, plus he did the soundtrack to Tommy, which is just amazing.
Along with Roger Daltrey, a frequent collaborator, he and the band The Who released twelve studio albums, the most recent of which, simply titled Who, came out in 2019. While some fans may have missed it, the album initially performed well on the charts in both the UK and the US.
The band has released 18 live albums, and their most famous is probably Live at Leeds from 1970.
It’s surprising, but The Who never topped the charts with a single in either the UK or the US. They only had one UK album reach number one: Who’s Next in 1971. Despite this, the quality of Pete Townshend and The Who’s music is undeniable – it’s truly exceptional.
