Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in James Cameron’s Avatar series, continuing the story after Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). The film features returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet. James Cameron collaborated with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver on the script, which was based on a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.
Making this film was a long and challenging process. Director James Cameron first mentioned the possibility of sequels back in 2006, following the huge success of the original Avatar, and officially announced several follow-up movies in 2010. To create these new stories, the filmmakers invented groundbreaking underwater performance capture technology – something that hadn’t been done completely successfully before. Filming for Fire and Ash began in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and took over three years to complete, finally wrapping up in December 2020.
The movie has been delayed several times, but is now scheduled to premiere in the U.S. on December 19th. Director James Cameron is also planning two more Avatar sequels, with Avatar 4 expected in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031.
