Marvel Zombies Bombs on Disney+, Fails to Chart on Nielsen

We nearly missed this one, but Marvel Zombies has landed as another Disney+ miss for the MCU.

Surprise! It’s another MCU project starring Ms. Marvel that nobody watched.

Even though Marvel released all four episodes of the animated series simultaneously, it didn’t appear on Nielsen’s charts. This is becoming a frequent issue for Marvel shows on streaming, particularly animated ones.

Failed to Break Nielsen’s Lowest Range

During the week of September 22nd to 28th (with Marvel Zombies premiering on September 24th), the lowest-performing original series on Netflix, according to Nielsen, was Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, with 428 million minutes viewed. Since Marvel Zombies didn’t appear on the chart, it means it received fewer than 428 million minutes of viewership.

The next week, Gen V had 400 million viewing minutes, but Marvel Zombies performed even worse, failing to reach that number.

Ultimately, Marvel Zombies didn’t reach 400 million viewing minutes, which suggests the Marvel Cinematic Universe is experiencing a drop in popularity on streaming platforms.

Another Disney+ Flop for Marvel

The series Marvel Zombies has unfortunately joined other Marvel projects on Disney+ that haven’t resonated with audiences. Other recent examples that didn’t perform well include:

  • Daredevil: Born Again (didn’t chart at all)
  • Ironheart (low average viewership which wouldn’t have charted)
  • What If…? (Season 3 didn’t chart)
  • Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (didn’t chart)
  • Eyes of Wakanda (didn’t chart)
  • X-Men ’97: (didn’t chart)

These shows haven’t gained significant traction with viewers, according to Nielsen and Samba TV data, suggesting people are losing interest and the audience is getting smaller.

Why Nielsen Matters

Nielsen is still the go-to source for measuring how many people watch streaming content, and it’s considered the most reliable data available. Because Disney+ automatically tracks viewership through Nielsen, if a Marvel show or movie doesn’t appear in the rankings, it indicates that people simply weren’t watching it.

The Franchise Problem

Even though all four episodes of Marvel Zombies were released simultaneously—which usually encourages viewers to watch a show all at once—the audience didn’t seem interested.

Despite featuring Kamala Khan as the supposed “Last Avenger,” the show struggled to attract an audience. It’s quite a disappointment!

This reinforces the idea that the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand doesn’t automatically generate excitement for its projects after Endgame, even when dealing with previously successful ideas like Marvel Zombies.

MCU budgets and content cut on Disney+

Because the Marvel shows on Disney+ didn’t attract as many viewers as hoped, Disney has lowered budgets and is planning to create less content.

Marvel Zombies season 2 has not been officially confirmed.
