Shawn Levy has shared extremely high praise for the final episode of Stranger Things, calling it a “masterpiece” and describing it as deeply moving in a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub.
After watching the very last episode of Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy called it a masterpiece, praising the Duffer brothers for a perfect ending. He admitted it was incredibly moving and emotionally impactful, saying it ‘wrecked’ him, and shared his sincere respect for Matt and Ross Duffer’s writing and direction.
Levy shared that he, along with the creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer, always emphasized the need for a satisfying conclusion. He believes that a strong ending can redeem any minor flaws that might have occurred throughout the story.
The creators, the Duffers, have always focused on ending things well – what we call ‘sticking the landing.’ They’ve been discussing this goal for a decade, starting with the very first season and continuing through every finale, including the series’ conclusion, he explained.
He pointed out that a memorable conclusion can make up for weaknesses elsewhere in a story.
Director Shawn Levy believes a strong ending can make people overlook flaws in a movie. He explained that even if a film has a slow or imperfect middle section, a satisfying conclusion is what audiences remember most. He considers a powerful ending essential, something he always strives for in his own work.
Levy also reflected on how rare it is for a TV series finale to get a movie theater screening.
He expressed immense pride in their work, stating it absolutely deserved the special recognition it received. He highlighted the unusual and beautiful nature of having a series finale shown in movie theaters, emphasizing that the series – and that final episode specifically – had truly earned such a unique honor.
The fifth and final season of the sci-fi horror hit Stranger Things is coming to Netflix in three parts. The first two volumes will be available on November 26th and December 25th, with the final episodes airing on December 31st. The season will have eight episodes total and is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and the Duffer Brothers.
The show’s familiar faces are all back, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and the young stars like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard. Amybeth McNulty, who had a guest role previously, is now a series regular. Joining the cast this season are Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, Alex Breaux, and Linda Hamilton.
I was completely hooked by this story, which picks up in the fall of 1987, not long after everything that happened in season four. It’s all about the group trying to stop Vecna after these terrifying Rifts start appearing in Hawkins. But things get so much harder when the military shows up and starts after Eleven! And with the anniversary of Will Byers going missing looming, you just know our friends are facing the biggest, most dangerous challenge of their lives.
