‘Death Stranding’ is Coming to Disney+ as a Show: Here’s All the Details

The popular video game series Death Stranding, created by Hideo Kojima, is being adapted into an animated series for Disney+.

During a Disney event in Hong Kong showcasing new shows for the Asia Pacific region, Hideo Kojima announced his upcoming series, currently called ‘Death Stranding Isolations,’ is planned for release on the streaming service in 2027.

Released in 2019 by Kojima Productions, Death Stranding rapidly gained popularity with players who appreciated its movie-like story and detailed, immersive world.

The game featured a star-studded cast including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Margaret Qualley. A follow-up, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, was released in June for PlayStation 5, and a movie version is also being made by A24.

I was so excited to hear from Kojima today! He’s going to be the executive producer for this new animated project, and it sounds incredible. He was there with the director, Takayuki Sano – I’ve heard great things about his work on shows like Bullet/Bullet and Gridman Universe. They even showed off some early concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, who did the visuals for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, and it looked amazing. Through a translator, Kojima said the series is going to be “pretty mind-blowing,” and that animation lets him explore ideas he just couldn’t with live-action. He also promised us that it will feature completely new characters, which is really exciting!

He shared that he really wants to bring the world of ‘Death Stranding’ to a wider audience, even people who don’t normally play video games, which I think is fantastic. What’s even more amazing is they’re doing it with beautiful, classic hand-drawn 2D animation, and it’s all being handled by E&H Production, a really top-notch animation studio in Japan.

Disney+ has revealed a brief summary of the upcoming series, currently titled Death Stranding Isolations. It will be a new story set in the world of Death Stranding, but separate from the events of the video games. The show will center around a young man and woman embarking on an adventure.

This growth demonstrates Kojima’s dedication to expanding the world of Death Stranding beyond video games, offering fans new ways to connect with its distinctive setting.
