Miles Teller, known for his role as Reed Richards in the 2015 movie Fantastic Four, has discussed the reasons why the film didn’t succeed.
In an interview with SiriusXM, the actor called the movie “unfortunate” and suggested a single individual was primarily to blame for its lack of success. He explained, “It’s a shame, because a lot of people put in a lot of effort. But honestly, one key person really messed things up,”
Teller shared that he took the role partly to prove himself as a leading actor. He explained, “When you’re a young actor, it feels like you need to be in a superhero movie to be taken seriously. This was a great opportunity for us, and I thought the cast was fantastic. I really enjoyed working with all those actors.”
The actor remembered his initial reaction to the completed film, saying he told a studio executive, “I think we’re in trouble.” Though he didn’t say who was at fault, many believe the director, Josh Trank, was responsible.
As a huge fan of cinema, it’s really disheartening to hear about what went on behind the scenes of that film. Apparently, there were some serious clashes between the director, Josh Trank, and Miles Teller – things got so tense they almost came to blows! And sadly, it wasn’t just with Teller; reports suggest Trank was really difficult with Kate Mara, even though the studio pushed for her to play Sue Storm. She’s actually described the whole experience as just awful, which is heartbreaking to hear as a fan.
Josh Trank publicly shared his disappointment with the final cut of the film on social media, stating he believed his original version would have been much better received. Experts suggest his comments may have resulted in a loss of $5 to $10 million in box office revenue.
Directed and co-written by Josh Trank, along with Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg, Fantastic Four centers on a group of bright high school students who create a portal to another dimension, granting them superpowers. Despite featuring a talented cast including Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Toby Kebbell, Reg E. Cathey, and Tim Blake Nelson, the film was a commercial disappointment, earning $168 million globally on a $120 million budget. Critics generally disliked it, and it received multiple Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Director and Worst Picture.
A follow-up movie was scrapped, making this the final Fantastic Four film released by 20th Century Fox before Disney bought the studio in 2019. The franchise was then restarted with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which came out on July 25th and is now part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
