Zachary Levi Wants a DC Comeback After Throwing Shade at James Gunn

So, I was reading that Zachary Levi – you know, the guy who played Shazam in the old DC movies – is really hoping to be part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe. He’s definitely throwing his hat in the ring, which is cool to hear!

I was listening to Zachary Levi on the Feature First podcast, and he basically said he’s open to returning to the DC Universe. He’d jump at the chance to reprise his role as Shazam if they asked, but he’s also interested in playing any DC character – he’s a big comic book fan, and clearly loves that world!

The 2019 movie Shazam! was very popular with both viewers and critics, grossing over $367 million globally. It was followed by Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023 and Black Adam in 2022, but unfortunately, neither of those films achieved the same level of success as the first one, either in terms of reviews or box office numbers.

Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios, it was expected that most actors from the previous DC Universe (DCEU) wouldn’t be continuing in the new DCU. So far, only a small number have kept their roles. These include the cast of Peacemaker, Jason Momoa (who will now play Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl movie), and Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother, who first appeared as Maxwell Lord in Superman.

I couldn’t help but notice Levi made a bit of a controversial comment recently. He was joking about Sean Gunn still being cast in the new DC projects, and he basically said it seemed like being James Gunn’s brother gives you some perks when it comes to getting roles! It definitely stirred up some talk online.

Zachary Levi’s career seemed to stall after he was replaced in the role of Shazam. The Hollywood Reporter noted that landing the part of Shazam had been a long-held ambition for him.

According to a source, landing the role of Shazam was a lifelong dream for the actor, who hoped it would launch him to superstardom like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson or Chris Evans. However, the success he anticipated didn’t materialize, and he’s reportedly disappointed about that. Since then, he’s relocated from Los Angeles to Texas and is now concentrating on faith-based films, a move some in the industry believe is a deliberate career change.
