Surprise! Amazon’s new Robin Hood series on MGM+ is already drawing backlash from fans.
Many viewers feel the show inaccurately portrays historical events and subtly promotes contemporary viewpoints while pretending to be a historical drama set in the medieval period.

Fans Call Out “Woke” Rewrite
A post on X (formerly Twitter) gained a lot of attention after a user said they quit watching a show after the third episode. They mentioned that the character Little John had been recast with actor Marcus Fraser, and the new portrayal involved a change in the character’s race.
I was really getting into the new Robin Hood series on Amazon. Everything looked historically accurate and true to the legend. But then episode 3 introduced Little John, and honestly, that ruined it for me.
One viewer, who identified as Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus, took issue with the show’s portrayal of an English hero as a pagan rebel battling what they described as “Christian invaders” following the Norman conquest.
A user on X claimed the story misrepresents Christianity by portraying it as an oppressive, outside force. They said it intentionally twists history to make Christians appear as the attackers and those practicing older religions as the victims.
The series is even more problematic than it appears. The core idea behind it is flawed because of its anti-Christian themes and historical mistakes. It portrays Robin Hood and his family as followers of the old Saxon pagan religion, battling against those who brought Christianity…

The Historical Reality
The criticism is correct. England had been a Christian nation for hundreds of years before William the Conqueror arrived in 1066. In 597 AD, Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine of Canterbury and a group of forty monks to spread Christianity among the Anglo-Saxons, and it quickly became established throughout England.
By the 11th century, both the Saxons and Normans were Catholic, so the Norman conquest wasn’t a religious conflict—it was a fight for power. Interestingly, the earliest stories of Robin Hood show him as a religious man who regularly attended church and honored the Virgin Mary, which is quite different from the non-religious hero portrayed in Amazon’s recent adaptation.

A “Modern” Rewrite
The new MGM+ show depicts Robin Hood and his family as followers of the old Saxon religion fighting against the Normans who were Christians. Many viewers believe this significantly changes historical facts, and isn’t simply creative storytelling. They argue it’s a deliberate attempt by Hollywood to reshape Western history to align with current beliefs.
The Series
The series Robin Hood features Jack Patten as Rob, Lauren McQueen as Marian, and Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham. The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, debuted on MGM+ on November 2nd.
