Ruby Rose Blasts Sydney Sweeney for ‘Ruining’ Christy Martin Biopic: ‘You’re a cretin and you ruined the film’

Ruby Rose has publicly criticized Sydney Sweeney following the disappointing box office performance of her new film, Christy. The movie, which tells the story of boxer Christy Martin, only earned $1.3 million during its opening weekend on November 7th. This makes it one of the worst openings for a film released in over 2,000 theaters.

Even though the movie’s initial performance wasn’t what they’d hoped for, Sweeney expressed a lot of pride in it. She posted behind-the-scenes pictures on Instagram on November 10th, saying she was incredibly proud to have portrayed someone as strong and determined as Christy Martin.

Ruby Rose wasn’t happy with the final version of the movie. On the same day it was released, the Orange Is the New Black actress shared her disappointment on Threads. She revealed she had been considered for a role and felt the original script was stronger before revisions were made.

Rose described the initial script for ‘Christy Martin’ as amazing and deeply impactful, noting she was set to play the character Cherry. She also shared that many involved with the project, including herself, were part of the LGBTQ+ community, and this connection was a significant reason she continued pursuing acting.

She criticized Sweeney, claiming the movie’s poor performance was due to mishandling a story important to the LGBTQ+ community. She wrote, “Actors losing roles is common, but her publicist blaming Sweeney and claiming it was ‘for the people’ is wrong. The LGBTQ+ community doesn’t want to see someone who expresses hatred towards them pretending to represent us. Sweeney’s actions were unacceptable and she damaged the film. The lead actress deserved a better experience.”

Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, Christy features Sydney Sweeney as boxer Christy Martin. The film also stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman. It chronicles Martin’s career as a prominent female boxer in the 1990s, as well as the hardships she faced, including a 2010 attempt on her life by her husband and boxing coach.

The first trailer for the upcoming movie #Christy is out, starring Sydney Sweeney as professional boxer Christy Martin. The film will be released in theaters on November 7th.
