James Cameron’s upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, promises to be another huge and immersive movie experience.
AMC Theatres has announced that the new Avatar movie will be 3 hours and 15 minutes long, making it the longest film in the Avatar series yet.
The new Avatar movie, a continuation of the story from the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water, will be released on December 19th. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet all reprise their roles. James Cameron directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.
I remember reading about James Cameron wanting to expand the world of Avatar way back in 2006 – that was years before anyone even knew how huge the first movie would be! After Avatar blew up in 2009, he said he was planning two sequels. But over the years, that idea just kept growing and growing, and now it’s become this massive, incredibly ambitious four-film series. It’s honestly one of the biggest undertakings I’ve ever heard of in filmmaking.
Prepare to dive into a world beyond your wildest dreams! Check out the new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, coming to theaters December 19th.
Plus, you can revisit the stunning visuals of Avatar: The Way of Water – back in 3D for one week only, starting October 3rd.

Filming for Fire and Ash started in New Zealand in September 2017, alongside the production of The Way of Water. It took over three years to complete, finishing in late 2020. The long filming time was largely due to director James Cameron’s efforts to create new technology for capturing performances underwater – something that hadn’t been attempted before.
Getting this movie to audiences hasn’t been easy! It’s faced nine delays, with the latest one happening in June 2023. Now that a final release date is set for December, fans can finally anticipate revisiting the world of Pandora. And there’s more to come – Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are already being made and are planned for release in 2029 and 2031.
The new film is expected to run for over three hours, continuing director Cameron’s pattern of creating long, detailed movies that completely draw viewers into the story. It’s unclear if audiences will embrace another very long movie, but given the director’s track record of making visually impressive hits, it likely won’t disappoint.
