DC Studios has revealed two upcoming series: a show centered around Jimmy Olsen within the new DC Universe created by James Gunn, and a series based on V for Vendetta that will likely exist outside the main DCU as part of the Elseworlds line.
These shows seem to confirm reports that James Gunn is shifting his focus from a massive, interconnected DC Universe to more self-contained stories, particularly those centered around Superman and related characters.

Gunn Shifts to the Superman Family
Our insiders told us last month that Gunn’s original Gods and Monsters plan is essentially over:
After his contract wasn’t renewed, Gunn shifted his focus from the ‘Gods and Monsters’ project to developing a ‘Superman Family’ storyline. This change is likely due to the potential sale of Warner Bros. Discovery – if Skydance buys WB (though Universal is also still a possible buyer), they’re expected to pursue a fresh beginning with new projects.
That’s exactly what’s happening.
The latest series featuring Jimmy Olsen, with Skyler Gisondo returning from his appearance in Superman, signals a change in direction for James Gunn. He’s focusing on stories centered around Superman and his supporting characters, rather than building a large, connected universe with many different heroes.
James Gunn is clearly focusing his efforts on building out the Superman side of the DC Universe. His projects – including Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Jimmy Olsen, and Man of Tomorrow – all share similar characters and a consistent style.

V for Vendetta Signals a Separate Direction
Okay, so here’s the deal with V for Vendetta. From what I’m hearing, it’s being treated as a completely separate story – an ‘Elseworlds’ type project, if you will. That basically means it won’t factor into James Gunn’s big DC Universe plans at all. It’s its own thing, a standalone story, and won’t connect to the main continuity he’s building.
This confirms what we’ve been seeing: Warner Bros. is continuing to work on projects outside of the new DC Universe while also considering a possible sale of the company. It seems James Gunn’s DC Universe isn’t growing overall, but rather branching into separate, distinct projects.
As a movie fan, I’ve always felt V for Vendetta feels less like a typical superhero movie and more like something you’d find as a high-quality, politically charged series on a streaming service. It’s the kind of project Warner Bros. would likely continue to support no matter who’s in charge of DC – it’s just that good and that different.

DC’s Future Still Uncertain
Everything hinges on timing. James Gunn’s current contract with DC extends to 2026, and he’s publicly stated he’s unsure what his role will be beyond that point.
Skydance and Comcast are currently discussing a potential purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery, and Netflix is also reportedly still considering a bid.
