Sabrina Carpenter will star in and help produce a new movie musical based on the classic story, Alice in Wonderland, for Universal Pictures. The film is a particularly meaningful project for Carpenter, who is a passionate fan of the source material.
Lorene Scafaria, the writer and director behind the popular film Hustlers, will be writing and directing a new movie. Marc Platt, a producer known for adapting Broadway hits like Wicked for the big screen, will produce it.
As a huge fan of shows like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars, I was excited to learn that Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton – the team at Alloy Entertainment who made those hits – are also involved in producing this! It’s great to know they’re bringing their experience to this project.
I’m hearing that director Carpenter first pitched this idea to Universal about a year ago, complete with a really compelling visual presentation. As the project took shape, director Scafaria and the producers came on board to help fully realize Carpenter’s initial vision. It sounds like a true collaborative effort!
Ryan Jones, Senior Vice President of Production Development at Universal, and Jacqueline Garell, Director of Production Development, are leading the project. Katie McNicol is overseeing it on behalf of Marc Platt Productions.
She plays a key role in developing both the story and visual style of the film, making sure it matches her artistic ideas.
