After Skydance cancelled J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek projects, a new report suggests Paramount is planning a complete reboot of the Star Trek movies. They’ve reportedly asked Simon Kinberg to essentially start the film franchise over from the beginning.
According to the Tachyon Pulse Podcast on YouTube, the new film by Kinberg is reportedly the beginning of a fresh trilogy intended to supersede all previous content created during the Alex Kurtzman era.
The YouTuber claims Paramount is aiming for the first movie to hit theaters around Christmas 2027 or early 2028, once the current Star Trek shows have finished airing. This likely means Skydance, the new owners, will cancel Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek series when its contract is up.

A Fresh Start For The Franchise
The YouTuber calls the project a fresh start. According to reports, Paramount executives have told the filmmakers that this movie will launch a new direction for Star Trek, completely separating it from the previous work done by Kurtzman and Secret Hideout.
The film is set in a previously unseen era of Federation history, falling between the events of Enterprise and the classic Star Trek series.
The YouTuber has a series called “Star Trek Origins” that will show how the Federation grew in its early days, eventually leading to the building and first voyage of the Enterprise.
He explains that the idea has changed because Paramount’s current leaders want more creative control and less oversight compared to when the project began.

A Planned Trilogy And Long TV Break
According to Tachyon Pulse, Paramount Pictures is planning ahead and wants detailed outlines for three movies before starting production on the first one. They envision these films as the core of a long-running franchise and might even put television series based on the same property on hold until the initial movie is released.
I don’t think Paramount will really wait eight years to make a new show if these movies do well, but it seems like they’re planning a pretty long break from Star Trek on TV for now.
If the reports are true, both Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds are expected to conclude production around 2027. The studio then plans to move filming to Pinewood Studios in Toronto. This move is intended to save money by reusing existing sets as they begin work on a rebooted series.

Paramount Reportedly Rejects Kurtzman Canon
The main point is that Paramount reportedly doesn’t plan to continue using the storylines and established universe created by Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout production company after their current agreement ends.
According to Tachyon Pulse, Paramount plans to disregard events from the Picard series, specifically the Romulan supernova and the Borg storyline in its third season. They will also avoid referencing characters or plot points introduced during the time Eric Kurtzman was involved with the franchise.
He says this is partially due to Secret Hideout retaining ownership of its original work, and Paramount’s unwillingness to negotiate for it. The plan, it seems, is to create any new series based on the established storylines from the Berman era onward, effectively ignoring the shows produced over the last ten years.

Why The New Movie Is A Prequel
The YouTuber explained that the studio wants a fresh start with a prequel, avoiding any conflicts with the existing storyline.
Starting the story before the original Star Trek series lets the filmmakers refresh the look and feel of the universe and avoid potential legal issues.
There’s very little known about the time between the original Enterprise and the first Star Trek series, and the studio seems to prefer keeping it that way, enjoying the creative freedom it allows.
The film would depict how the Romulans and Klingons initially responded to the Federation growing in power, all while staying consistent with established Star Trek history.
Taking The Rumor With Caution
He emphasizes that this information is currently unconfirmed, but several sources connected to the project have shared the same story. He plans to present the evidence he’s collected in his next video.
