Just two weeks ago, Ignacia Fernández, a relatively unknown singer in the death metal scene, surprised everyone. While competing in the Miss World Chile pageant – a competition to select Chile’s representative for the international Miss World contest – Fernández invited her band’s guitarist to perform with her on stage.
Pageant contestants often choose hopeful or overly cheerful songs, which, while showcasing their voices, can be fairly ordinary and easily forgotten. Ignacia Fernández was different. Her performance – and the unique musical genre she selected – made a lasting impression on those who watched it, both live and online, and continues to be remembered.
At just 27, this model and the vocalist for the Chilean band Decessus (definitely worth checking out!) showed that beauty and a talent for the darker side of death metal can definitely coexist. She and guitarist Carlos Palma were a surprisingly fantastic combination.

Honestly, her talent really shone through and helped her win Miss World Chile! Now she’s going for the international title in 2026, and I’m kinda hoping she’ll perform with her band again if she wins. That would be awesome – a huge win for her, and for metal music in general. She’s seriously talented, and the world needs to see more people like her.
The song immediately establishes itself as metal, but it begins with Fernández singing about heartbreak in English. This softer style lasts only about 13 seconds before she powerfully switches to intense death metal vocals. She’s clearly experienced with this technique, delivering a confident, strong, and expertly controlled performance.
That got me thinking – what about a ‘Mr. and Miss Death Metal World’ competition? People could get dressed up – suits, dresses, the works – and perform their best songs. Let’s face it, people enjoy watching attractive performers, and maybe if death metal had more charismatic figures like Ignacia Fernández, it would reach a wider audience.
