Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director, has finally realized a long-held ambition: bringing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to the screen. The new Netflix film is visually stunning and atmospheric, and Del Toro has updated the gothic language from Shelley’s 1818 novel for a contemporary audience. Oscar Isaac, known for The Shape of Water, stars as Dr. Frankenstein and recently read excerpts from Shelley’s original book as part of the film’s promotion. You can watch Isaac’s reading below.
Numerous actors have played Dr. Frankenstein, including Kenneth Branagh and Colin Clive. However, Oscar Isaac brings a distinctly original interpretation to the role. He portrays Victor Frankenstein as surprisingly relatable, even though the character is self-centered and often cruel. It’s difficult to dislike Oscar Isaac on screen, regardless of the part he’s playing. The film cleverly uses a split screen, showing Isaac performing scenes as he reads passages from Mary Shelley’s novel. This reminds us that Shelley, a remarkably talented teenager, essentially invented both science fiction and Gothic horror – a true icon.
With his film Frankenstein now released, Guillermo del Toro has revealed his next Gothic project: a new adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. He’s not planning to make a Dracula movie, despite what you might expect. Fans are already imagining Oscar Isaac as the Phantom, and many believe he’d be perfect for the role. For now, you can see Isaac shine as a brilliant, troubled scientist in Frankenstein, where he brings Jacob Elordi’s monster to life – it’s currently available on Netflix.
